Arturo Sandoval Essentials

Known for passionately precise high-register riffs, Cuba-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval leapt into action as part of Irakere, which fused Afro-Cubana with bebop in tracks like "Aguanile Bonko". Sandoval's Dizzy Gillespie-encouraged jazz dreams flourished after he fled to the U.S. in 1990. Full of straight-ahead bop and mellifluous flugelhorn balladry, his 1992 Clifford Brown tribute album, I Remember Clifford, cleared the decks for nostalgic ruminations like the sophisticated Afro-Cuban "Danzon" and fiery, flamenco-flavoured "A Mis Abuelos".
