Since the mid-'60s Rio de Janeiro's Arthur Verocai has been one of his country's foremost composers and songwriters, deftly mining a rich vein of folk, jazz, bossa nova, rock and funk, uncovering a few gleaming nuggets of psychedelia along the way. His 1972 self-titled solo debut announced an arrival in style with a masterful musical quilt: click-clacking percussion, textured horns, grooving guitars and far-off vocals. And he continued his experiments in his rich-grooving universe for years before his work struck a chord with a new generation as the ‘00s saw him widely sampled by hip-hop MCs.
