About Tony McPhee
Guitarist and singer-songwriter, Tony McPhee emerged from the lively British blues scene of the early 1960s. He formed the Dollarbills and then John Lee’s Groundhogs, frequently accompanying and also recording with visiting American bluesmen such as John Lee Hooker and Champion Jack Dupree. In the late '60s, McPhee secured a recording contract for the now shortened Groundhogs. In addition to his predilection for the blues, McPhee incorporated elements of progressive rock and psychedelia; and touched on religion, philosophy, and social commentary in his lyrics. McPhee continued to work under the Groundhogs moniker in subsequent decades, playing live and recording in the studio with a number of different musicians, before finally disbanding the group in late 2004. During this time he also worked with Terraplane and the Tony McPhee Band.
