Without any knowledge of guitarist Tim Green’s pedigree as a member of legendary D.C. hardcore band Nation of Ulysses, one would think the Fucking Champs were a group of mid-80s technical-metal shredders. The San Francisco-based trio, however, is contemporary and deadly serious about their immaculate, proggy instrumentals. Van Halen, Rush, and Yngwie Malmsteen are some of the band’s sonic touchstones, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg, as The Champs frequently deviate from their two guitar and drums equation to incorporate electronic sounds and complex time-signatures.
