Essential Albums
- Ludovic Navarre’s first (stunning) LP in 15 years weaves in the rhythms of Mali.
- In making its digital debut in June 2012, this seminal jazztronica album from 2000 received both sharp remastering and iTunes LP treatment. Producer/composer Ludovic Navarre was on the vanguard of the French electronic music scene that begat Daft Punk, Air and Dimitri from Paris before releasing his sophomore album under the St. Germain moniker. Tourist continues to sound fresh, starting with the Marlena Shaw-sampling opening track, “Rose rouge”, and concluding with the vibraphone-driven funk-fueled closer “What You Think About”. Navarre masterfully balances programmed sounds with live performances by the likes of Jamaican guitar master Ernest Ranglin on “Montego Bay Spleen”. Deluxe content includes a bonus live track; the animated video for the infectious single “So Flute” and the semi-animated visual treatment for “Sure Thing” (memorable for its inventive John Lee Hooker/Miles Davis sample); photos, recording credits and a biographical essay.

About St Germain
One of the few producers to pursue a real fusion of jazz and house music, Frenchman Ludovic Navarre began recording in the early '90s using various aliases for a range of French imprints. St. Germain debuted in 1994 for Laurent Garnier's F Communications label and debut album Boulevard appeared in 1996. The LP worked as a hybrid of R&B and jazz with the growing French house scene exemplified by Garnier, La Funk Mob, and Dimitri from Paris. Tourist, issued in 2000 by Blue Note, took the concept further, with Navarre working post-production on a sextet, and was rewarded with Top Ten placings in many countries and millions of copies sold. A hiatus followed until the arrival of a self-titled album in 2015, inspired by Malian music.
