- The 1976 romantic comedy Chhoti Si Baat owes much of its success to the work by composer Salil Chowdhury and lyricist Yogesh. The tale of an introverted man following his dreams to Bombay plays out to a fun, upbeat soundtrack that includes "Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan", K. J. Yesudas and Asha Bhosle's teasing duet that establishes the leads characters' relationship. The jazziness of "Na Jane Kyon Hota Hai Yeh Zindagi Ke Saath" evokes a woman lost in thought—thanks to Lata Mangeshkar's pensive vocals—while Mukesh's triumphant baritone turns "Yeh Din Kya Aaye" into a celebratory croon.
- Salil Chowdhury's soundtrack to the landmark Malayalam film Nellu features standout performances from playback legends P. Susheela and Lata Mangeshkar. The compositions have an earthy, organic feel and rely on bouncy morsing, santoor and tabla tones. The call-and-response vocals between Manna Dey and P. Jayachandran in "Chemba Chemba" have an exciting, visceral quality that evokes the Kerala forests where Nellu is set.
- Led by Salil Chowdhury, the stars of India’s ‘70s music scene banded together for one of the era’s most celebrated melodramas. Anand features ‘bits of timelessness’ with Rajesh Khanna in “Bade Chhupe Rustam Babumoshai”, while a rare appearance by legendary playback singer Manna Dey is delightfully captured in “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli”. The moving, caramel vocals of Mukesh also stand out, with two soaring tunes grounded by his voice's depth: “Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye”, which floats with simple harmonic progressions, and “Maine Tere Liye", the bell-like tones of which resound throughout.
