Essential Albums
- Ae Dil Hai Mushkil may just be the ultimate romance soundtrack, displaying composer Pritam's wide emotional reach and solid musical fundas—and packed with enough hooks to keep the songs lodged firmly in your brain long after that tearful goodbye scene. The Sufi-inspired “Bulleya”, the energetic party anthem “The Breakup Song” and the brisk electronic number “Cutiepie” hold their own, but it's Arijit Singh's vocals on the title track—starting close and intimate, and building to a heartbreaking crescendo—that grab tight and don't let go.
- Anurag Basu's story of a mute and deaf protagonist Barfi! is made even more enthralling by Pritam's soundtrack. The lyrics to "Ala Barfi", written by Swanand Kirkire and performed by Mohit Chauhan, are an absorbing lesson in witty wordplay, while "Saawali Si Raat" is a gentle lullaby sung by Arijit Singh. Shreya Ghoshal and Nikhil Paul's vocal interplay on "Aashiyan" brings to mind '60s grooves, backed by a dreamy violin and flute in a whimsical arrangement.
- Pritam & Sandesh Sandilya are unstoppable in pop mode on the Jab We Met soundtrack—which was composed Sanjoy Chowdhury and one of the top-selling albums of 2007. They employ a light touch that lifts this romantic comedy score beyond the big-screen, giving it a life of its own. The bhangra club beats of “Mauja Hi Mauja”, Punjabi dance number “Nagada Nagada”, road-trip singalong favourite “Yeh Ishq Hai” (with an even livelier Dj A-Myth Bollywood remix included) and Rashid Khan’s moving Sufi influence on “Aaoge Jab Tum” all turn this album into unforgettable pop gold.
