Essential Albums
- Umrao Jaan is renowned for composer Khaiyyaam's gritty depiction of well-known playback singer Asha Bhosle. The film's Sufi-esque, historical setting allows for exploration of Bhosle's range—resulting in both Bhosle and Khaiyyaam winning Filmfare Awards in their respective categories. Classical Indian instruments, including the tabla and sarod, are featured to create a realistic representation of the main character's courtesan profession, depicted in songs like "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" and "In Ankhon Ki Masti".
- This 1979 super-hit features some of Khaiyyam’s most melodious and evergreen compositions—which also earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Music Director. Lata Mangeshkar and Nitin Mukesh voice the main theme—"Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar Aaja"—a tune so popular, it earned two versions on the soundtrack. Featuring distinctive percussion and string instrumentation, the classical dance number "Qadar Tune Na Jani" showcases an elegant performance by famed playback singer Asha Bhosle, while dreamy strings and a flute-based melody round out Mangeshkar's solo vocals on "Chori Chori Koi".
- One of composer Khaiyyaam’s best-known love songs dominates this 1976 album—title track “Kabhi Kabhi Mere”—and for good reason: the duet soars with the crystalline vocals of playback singers Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. That’s before another Bollywood ballad steals the spotlight with classical violin strings, sax and flute accents in Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar’s “Tere Chehre Se Nazar Nahin”. The duo combines once more for a ‘70s party tune with an equally bright arrangement on “Tera Phoolon Jaisa Rang”.

About Khaiyyaam
Khayyam reigned in the Bollywood world of music and poetry. Having composed the music for masterpieces like Kabhi Kabhi, Umrao Jaan, and Bazaar, Khayyam worked with some of the greatest poets and singers of India. With a career spanning almost 55 years, Khayyam was selective enough to compose music for just 55 movies, though his non-film repertoire of ghazals and bhajans is huge. Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi was born in the village of Rahon in the Nawanshahr District, and learned music from Baba Chishti. In his early days he was intrigued by the world of cinema and went to Bombay to fulfill his dreams. His earliest success was for the movie Phir Subha Hogi, written by Sahir Ludhyanvi. With the success of his songs in Footpath, Mohabbat Issko Kehte Hain, Lala Rukh, Shagun, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aakhri Khat, and Phir Subah Hogi, Khayyam became a household name. After a short break from music, Khayyam returned as composer for the film Kabhi Kabhi, which marked his biggest commercial success to date. Kabhi Kabhi was a love story woven around the life of a poet, and Khayyam was the obvious choice for its music. The 1980s saw Khayyam compose for a string of timeless classics like Noorie, Bazaar, Umrao Jaan, and Razia Sultan. After a long gap, Khayyam returned to compose music for Banaras 1918 -- A Love Story and Yatra. ~ Bhasker Gupta
