On The Commons, Veteran bassist Gaurav Balani’s solo project-turned-band Inalab leads a sublime exercise in thoughtful genre experimentation. From the prog-rock drama of opener “Bonzo”—and a star turn from vocalist Shruti Dhasmana—to the complex instrumental title track and the brooding, flute-infused highlight “Tilikum", the EP is infused with themes of environmental and social decay. It makes for a weighty listen.
