Groundbreaking composer and percussionist Viveick Rajagopalan dips into Carnatic classical, rap, drum ‘n’ bass and jazz on his debut album Ta Dhom Project, with a world music traveller’s sense for polyrhythms and a jazz master’s gift for syncopation and experimentation. Mridangam and kanjira anchor the pieces in Carnatic music—as does his liberal use of konnakol on “Just Bols”, vocalising syllables similarly to Hindustani classical’s tabla bol. “Bol Rap” employs a touch of synth for an urban edge, while on “Dhvani”, guest artists MC Mawali, MC Tod FoD and MC Mayavi spit bars in counterpoint and unison. The result? A breath-taking collaboration with impressive vocal performances across the board.
