The Ghanaian MC reintroduces a beloved genre at its sultriest. Though the words “sexy” and “highlife” seem an unlikely pair, prolific Ghanaian hip-hop star Joey B ventures to go where no artist has gone before. With Sexy Highlife, B answers the question that others of his ilk were potentially too scared to ask: What would a traditional Ghanaian genre sound like when filtered through the sensibilities of an artist unafraid to mix and match multiple diasporic sonic textures? Most strikingly, B takes rhythmic cues from NYC-originating savant and sexy drill pioneer Cash Cobain. Along for the ride are Odunsi (The Engine), who supplies his signature bounce to groovy “Exopa”, Bisa Kdei, singing in Twi on “Kyeiwaa” and samples of late Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba (“Princess”, “Akosua Broni”). Add a few slurry melodies here, a couple of funky guitar licks there, and you have nine songs that work perfectly for a calm night drive or a sweaty grind session on the dance floor.
