A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack for the politically-charged Rang De Basanti folds Punjabi history into a meta-narrative about a British filmmaker casting her wayward Delhi University friends as freedom fighters in her next film. The worshipful “Ik Onkar” opens the album with an elegant, minimalist arrangement before the Daler Mehndi title track follows up with a high-energy bhangra. Emotions swell, too, evoked by sighing strings in “Tu Bin Bataye” and the searching, Middle Eastern percussion of “Khalbali”, which infuses themes of race and rebellion with romance and hope.
