Motherjane's 2009 release Maktub—their sole album for over a decade—begins with chopped-up konnakol vocals with a jagged electric guitar riff cutting in just as Suraj Mani's mountaintop singing begins; it doesn't take long to realise this will be an exhilarating ride. The rest of the record is an eclectic, primal howl, with churning guitars and dazzling solos blazing through "Broken"—an air guitarist's dream—before dipping into cerebral prog-rock territory on "Mindstreet".
