IT'S NOT A PHASE

IT'S NOT A PHASE

By the late ’90s, the rock kids were selling their guitars to buy turntables, and now the EDM wunderkinds make room for metalcore riffs between bass drops. The Canadian producer born Isabelle Rezazadeh mastered her DJ craft as a teenager, but her first and most formative live music experiences were punk shows. The two-time Juno winner’s fifth EP bridges the ever-shrinking gap between the big-room beats of her mentor deadmau5 and the angsty rock of her youth. Still, it’s a spectrum: The grimy dubstep of “Blue in the Face” hits like a wrecking ball, where “Embers”, with vocalist Raven Gray, sounds like a long-lost Evanescence deep cut with a souped-up low end. But the concept’s best realised on “Not Enough”, a glitchy, grungy collab with Alice Glass, the fellow Canadian who was melding harsh punk and electronic sounds before it was cool.
