Six albums in, the veteran pop-rock outfit sounds fresher, freer and more polished than ever. Red Pill Blues, a reference to The Matrix, finds them gliding effortlessly through slick staccato grooves (“What Lovers Do”, featuring SZA; “Don’t Wanna Know”, featuring Kendrick Lamar); lush, ’80s-inspired synths (“Who Am I”, featuring LunchMoney Lewis); and slow-rolling R&B (“Cold”, featuring Future). But frontman Adam Levine shines brightest on “Help Me Out”, an ambitious pop duet with Julia Michaels that shows off his remarkable vocal dexterity.
