EDITORS’ NOTES

The Kerala group's eponymous 2008 debut, Avial documents a fleeting snapshot of rock music history—singer Anandraj Benjamin Paul left both the band and India later that same year. Nevertheless, the wriggling turntable scratches, earthy, electric guitar riffs, splashy percussion and Paul's mesmeric chant-like singing made the record an alt-rock hit. The band's use of Malayalam throughout was a bold statement, as they endeavoured to make space for their native language in India's vast musical and cultural landscape.
