Sérgio Godinho Essentials

The poetically inclined singer/songwriter Sérgio Godinho debuted in 1971 as Portugal's youth were rising up against their authoritarian government. His coming-of-age anthem "O Primeiro Dia" (First Day) responded to the atmosphere with a mix of American folk rock, French chanson and Brazilian-influenced lyrics of resistance. "Liberdade" (Freedom) set its demands for peace, bread and education in Tropicália-like psychedelia. After the Carnation Revolution, Godinho could relax with Caetano Veloso on the luscious bossa nova stylings of 1986's "Lisboa Que Amanhece" (Lisbon at Dawn).
