Junior Kimbrough Essentials

There’s hypnotic music, and then there’s Junior Kimbrough. Emerging from the same hill-country blues scene as R. L. Burnside, the late guitarist specialised in minimalist boogie workouts like the seven-minute-plus “You Better Run” that feel as if they could stretch into infinity. His is an eerily sublime sound, one that he developed while jamming at Mississippi juke joints (many of which he owned) going as far back as the ’60s. Amazingly, Kimbrough didn’t even release his debut album until he was in his 60s. A must-hear for any serious blues fan, 1992’s All Night Long stands as a landmark in trance-inducing American blues.
