Hulvey belongs to a wave of Gen Z MCs infusing Christian hip-hop with the vulnerability and melodicism of emo rap and bedroom pop. Born Christopher Hulvey in 1999, the soft-spoken Georgia native developed his mellow flow while still in school and secured a deal with Lecrae’s Reach Records before his 21st birthday. His 2021 debut, Christopher, won over hip-hop fans thanks to its autobiographical reflections on youth and faith; subsequent singles like “Altar” caught the attention of the contemporary praise and worship community with a message centred squarely on loving Christ. The rapper’s ability to remain true to his authentic self while also mixing up genres extends to his collaborative work. In 2023, Hulvey rode co-pilot with Forrest Frank on a clutch of hits that audaciously fuse hip-hop and gospel with lo-fi beatwork.
