The guitar-wielding folk duo has been a popular format in Israeli folk music, and few have had the impact of Haparvarim (The Suburbs). Formed by Yossi Houri and Nissim Menachem in 1960 and named for the Yemenite neighbourhood of Tel Aviv where they grew up, the twosome became renowned for their warm takes on traditional Hebrew songs. Haparvarim went through a major shift in the late ‘70s when Menachem was replaced by Uri Harpaz, who enriched the group's sound with his background in Latin American music.
