About Kim Scott

A popular flute player, Kim Scott first emerged in 2011 playing a soulful, crossover style of jazz and R&B. She gained national attention with her 2016 single "Sizzle" from her album Southern Heat. Scott also toured as a member of the all-female ensemble Jazz in Pink and in 2019 she topped the smooth jazz charts with her track "Emerge." A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Scott grew up in a religious and musical family, the daughter of saxophonist and former Dynamic Soul Machine member Albert Felder and pianist, vocalist, and music teacher Belinda Floyd. A flute player from a young age, Scott studied classical music while attending the prestigious Alabama School of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, she received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama to study music performance, and ultimately earned her masters at Oklahoma State. She eventually accepted a job teaching at her alma mater, the ASCF, and in 2006 became the school's musical director. Over the next decade, she built a reputation as a dedicated educator in the Birmingham area. However, as a longtime jazz fan, especially the music of flautists Bobbi Humphrey and Hubert Laws, Scott also had the desire to perform. She began working on her jazz chops and in 2010 uploaded a cover of Beyonce's "Deja Vu" online, which garnered positive feedback. She began playing live and caught the attention of guitarist/producer Keith Cashmere Williams, who invited her to open for his group on tour. Williams also produced Scott's debut album, 2011's Crossing Over. More albums followed, including Rite of Passage and Southern Heat; the latter included the single "Sizzle," co-written with trumpeter Lin Rountree. Along with her own work, Scott also joined the all-female jazz group Jazz in Pink, with whom she has toured. In 2019, she returned with her fourth album, Free to Be, which included the number one Billboard Smooth Jazz Songs charting-single "Emerge" featuring Jonathan Fritzen. ~ Matt Collar
