Through their various phases Mashina have flitted from ska to hard rock and grunge, but the leading Israeli rockers took a fresh, innovative approach for their 10th album, Dead Singers Go. “Blues Taco Bar” cultivates, with typical humour, an air of mystery bringing together low-pitched vocals, surf-inspired guitar reverb and Mariachi-style bursts of horns, while “The New Material” weaves evocative keyboards and synths. But it’s the album’s third single “Hashmiu Kol”—with its penetrating, piano-driven social commentary written by Yuval Banai and Shlomi Bracha—that strikes with true melodic and lyrical force.
