UGK Essentials

As pioneers of what they called “country rap tunes”, Texas-based duo UGK were masters of balancing studio craftsmanship and brawny attitude. The late Pimp C's hard-hitting production—heavy on organs and blues-inflected guitar licks—was as comfortable as his rap style was brash, and Bun B is a true rap formalist. On the elegiac "One Day", they ruminate on mortality over slow-rolling strummed guitars, while the lascivious bassline on "Take It Off" makes that song an enigmatic gem. "Int'l Players Anthem" was Pimp C's masterpiece, its Willie Hutch sample a pure religious experience behind a lewd, rude verse.
