Led by the singer Ruby Wood, the Leed-based Submotion Orchestra honed their sound in a weekly residency at a hookah bar in their hometown, but their rich blend of soul, jazz and bass music soon had them recording for labels like Exceptional and Ninja Tune offshoot Counter. While their sound design and stylistic cues tip toward contemporary electronic modes, their full-band arrangements—incorporating bass, horns, keys and muscular drums and percussion—lean closer to classic funk and soul. With every album, their fusion of groove, texture and songwriting has gotten steadily more bewitching.
