Sir Neville Marriner Essentials

A fine violinist in his younger days, Neville Marriner will always be associated as the founder and conductor of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the London-based orchestra that became the byword for excellence from the early 1970s onwards. Marriner honed an ensemble what could do anything, from Bach to Bartók, Handel to Britten, and all during the record industry’s boom years throughout the 1980s and ’90s. The Academy were prolific, and attracted a devoted following. As we celebrate what would have been Marriner’s 100th birthday, here are some of the great conductor’s finest moments with the Academy, plus a few of his greatest recordings with other notable orchestras.
