Rita Ora Essentials

If there was a fairytale element to Kosovo-born Rita Ora’s arrival as a pop star (she was working in a West London shoe store when Jay Z’s Roc Nation signed her to a 2008 recording and publishing deal) then her career since has been characterised by hard realities and undeniable, indomitable talent. Early collaborative singles—like hedonistic, b-girl calling card “How We Do (Party)” and high-energy DJ Fresh behemoth “Hot Right Now”—gave a sense of Ora’s husky, charismatic R&B delivery. Yet, it was Phoenix (the much-delayed second record that followed an acrimonious label dispute) that really cemented this polymath actress and TV personality’s unerring way with an enormous hook. And now, the full-throated, finger-snapping soul of “How To Be Lonely” (co-written by Lewis Capaldi) promises enthralling things for an approaching third record.
