Born in Chile and raised in Germany, Ricardo Villalobos may just as well be from another planet, given his music's mind-melting psychedelic properties. A decade's worth of singles culminated with '03's Alcachofa LP, which fused minimal techno with hints of melody and far-out sound design. His releases since have been even more idiosyncratic with their rippling percussion, hypnotic grooves and extreme track lengths, often running to 20 minutes or more. He's applied his singular aesthetic to remixes of Neneh Cherry, Depeche Mode and even, with Max Loderbauer, the ECM label's catalogue.
