Michael Quercio, frontman of The Three O'Clock, playfully coined the term "paisley underground" to differentiate southern California's new breed of '60s-inspired guitar bands from their hardcore and power-pop contemporaries. From The Dream Syndicate's distortion, through The Rain Parade's languid shimmer, to The Bangles' garagey pop, it was as forward-looking as it was retro.
