Miss May I's spin on melodic metalcore is a triumph of intuitive dynamics. The Ohio band's machine gun-esque blast beats, throttling riffs and snarling licks alternate with moments of restraint, such as the ominous solo guitar ushering in the frantic "I.H.E." Yet since forming in the mid-'00s, Miss May I have also emphasised feral aggression. Frontman Levi Benton boasts one of metalcore's best growls: He shrieks like a demonic spirit on "Forgive and Forget" and spits melodic gravel on "Bastards Left Behind". But on "Deathless", a wrenching song marked by deep personal loss, his agonised screams are offset by wailing clean vocals.
