After playing with Brazilian rock band Vímana in the '70s, the warm-voiced singer and guitar player Lulu Santos embarked on a successful solo career in the early '80s, playing pop-rock and Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB)—lyrical, guitar-based Brazilian pop. Santos was soon catapulted to superstardom, releasing a flurry of sweet and optimistic records that produced breezy ballads and hits tinted with emphatic slide guitars. In the '90s, he shifted focus to a more dance-oriented sound, harnessing the thumping beats of go-go pop influences.
