Little Birdy Essentials

Katy Steele was always going to make like a bird. Her father is Perth guitar hero Rick and her brother Luke the cosmic conductor of Empire of the Sun. When she formed Little Birdy with Simon Leach, Matt Chequer and Scott O'Donoghue in 2002, demos of "Relapse" and "Baby Blue" were on the Oz indie radar overnight. Their crunchy guitar-pop debut, BigBigLove, ruled '04 with its clumsy-sweet alternative radio hit "Beautiful to Me" and the first four nominations in a long flirtation with ARIA voters. The LA-made Hollywood was more textured and expansive in '06 and Confetti made a third Top 10 debut three years later. A serial duettist (Paul Kelly, Josh Pyke, brother Luke), Steele moved to New York to conjure up a solo album in 2010.
