Léo Ferré: Next Steps

Léo Ferré: Next Steps

Beyond crooning some of France's most beautifully melancholic ballads, Léo Ferré also possessed a barely concealed cheeky streak. On 1962's “Mon général”, a lustrous orchestral arrangement serves as a Trojan horse to deliver a cutting critique of then-president Charles de Gaulle; even less subtle is “Thank You Satan”, a cheery folk jazz jaunt on which Ferré gives it up for the man downstairs.
