John Waite Essentials

Lancaster singer John Waite’s quivering yet forceful voice made his 1984 single “Missing You”, a slick slice of soul-influenced rock, one of the biggest hits of the early MTV era. Previously, as lead singer of the late-’70s power-pop act The Babys, Waite had given emotional heft to the pleading, uptempo singles “Isn’t It Time” and “Everytime I Think of You”. In the ’80s, he blended power pop’s infectious melodies with R&B’s fire on solo tracks like the synthy “Tears”, and his soul-stirring voice helped make “When I See You Smile”, a 1989 smash for the star-studded supergroup Bad English, one of the hard-rock era’s enduring power ballads.
