As Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner creates fervent experimental pop like her life depends on it. Debuting with 2016’s lo-fi gem Psychopomp, the Korean American singer/songwriter channels her most paralysing fears and emotions into music that’s colourful and cacophonous. Tracks such as “In Heaven” navigate grief in a dizzying blur of reverb, while “Everybody Wants to Love You” celebrates the complexities of desire in a web of glimmering guitar. As Zauner digs deeper into the roots of her traumas and passions, her sound continues to expand, like on sultry synth-pop exploration “Road Head” and giddy orchestral revelry “Paprika”.
