Psychedelic space-rock juggernaut Hawkwind bridged the gap between prog and metal with their thunderous, extended jams and mind-expanding LPs. Formed in '69, the band achieved their commercial breakthrough when bassist and future Motörhead leader Lemmy Kilmister joined the fold three years later. Though they never repeated their early chart success, the Londoners still enjoyed a lengthy run through live performances and lysergic-inspired sonic exploration on their studio efforts. They have also proven highly influential on an array of artists ranging from Monster Magnet to Ozric Tentacles.
