Cult of Luna Essentials

Cult of Luna are unusual because they're both sludgy and ethereal. Emerging from the post-metal scene in the '00s, these Swedes wrap body-slamming riffs and shredding screams in ambient textures. “I: The Weapon” is prime CoL thanks to dynamic swells and delicate cello that plays guttural bass patterns. Breaking the 12-minute mark, “Echoes” is even more epic; celestial guitars and droning keys enchant before descending into a grinding dirge. When the band use electronic elements, as on the static-soaked “Following Betulas”, their sound takes on a hypnotically interstellar feel.
