Upon his arrival in the early ‘60s, Bobby Hutcherson brought to the vibraphone a fire and passion missing since the days of Lionel Hampton. He was a virtuoso of the instrument, but even at his most experimental, his music always glows and allures, full of shimmering mirages and astonishing flashes of mysticism. His inviting, innovative spirit extended into soul-jazz in the late ‘60s and fusion in the ‘70s, and saw him conjure swirling works of vibraphone-laden funk.
