As one of Animal Collective's founding members, David "Avey Tare" Portner has helped bring psychedelic experimentation back to indie rock. His side projects share this predilection - in 2007 he released a collaborative album with ex-wife Kría Brekkan that played their songs backwards. Terrestrial Tones, the band he formed with Eric Copeland of Black Dice, explored noise music at its harshest and most abrasive. And despite its forbidding name, his group Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks has produced some the catchiest and most accessible music of his solo career.
