South Korean countertenor Vince Yi was raised in California. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music at Boston University, and received his doctorate in music from the University of Michigan. He was a winner of the Shoshana Foundation's Richard F. Gold Career Grant, and in 2007 he was the only countertenor selected for the San Francisco Opera's Merola Opera Program. He sang the role of Idamante in Mozart's Idomeneo, the lead in Handel's Giulio Cesare, Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Nerone in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, and Emilia in Vinci's Catone in Utica, which was recorded by Decca. In 2009, he appeared at Carnegie Hall in a program sponsored by the Marilyn Horne Foundation. Yi performed at the Gala Night of Countertenors at Versailles and Athens, and sang in Peter Sellars' production of Purcell's The Indian Queen at the English National Opera, the Perm Opera, and Teatro Real Madrid. In 2014 he also sang the title role in Vinci's Artaserse at Opéra Royal de Versailles, the Cologne Opera, and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Yi has been a faculty member of the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University, and taught at Belvoir Terrace, a performing arts summer camp for girls. ~ Blair Sanderson
