About Thurl Ravenscroft
Thanks to his iconic bass register, singer and voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft performed on some of the most famous animated films, TV shows, and commercial campaigns of the 20th century. ∙ Ravenscroft cofounded The Mellomen in 1948, and the quartet provided backup vocals for many stars of the Big Band era, including Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, and Spike Jones. ∙ In 1953, he debuted as the voice of Frosted Flakes mascot Tony the Tiger, a role he maintained for more than 50 years. ∙ He provided bass vocals for Rosemary Clooney’s 1954 single “This Ole House,” a No. 1 hit in both the US and the UK. ∙ Although he was not listed in the closing credits, Ravenscroft sang “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” for the 1966 animated holiday classic Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. ∙ In the 1970 animated Disney film The Aristocats, he voiced the character of Billy Boss and sang on “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat,” alongside Scatman Crothers and Phil Harris.
