About The Trix Sisters

A British singing duo, formed by contralto Helen and soprano Josephine Trix, they performed in London theatres in the years before and after World War I. Helen also worked as a solo act, recording at least three Edison cylinders. One of these, from 1907, was ‘Lulu And Her La-La-La’, and another was ‘The Bird On Nellie’s Hat’. Thanks to the efforts of a fan, the first of these songs could be heard on the Internet almost a century after it was made. Allowing for the much less than perfect conditions of this primitive recording, her singing voice is clear and her diction precise. The Trix Sisters appeared in a 1921 André Charlot’s revue, A To Z, which starred Jack Buchanan and Gertrude Lawrence, and for which Helen was co-author of the book (along with Ronald Jeans and Dion Titheradge). In 1926 the sisters recorded four sides for English Columbia and a further side for the same company three years later accompanied by a seven-piece band, oddly named the Gilt-Edged Four, which included trumpeter Max Goldberg and saxophonists Al and Ray Starita.
