About Shawn Hook

Shawn Hook began his musical journey at a very young age, learning piano, bass, and trombone, singing in a choir, and enrolling in music composition class in high school. Born Shawn Hlookoff in South Slocan, British Columbia, he started college as a geological engineering major before committing full-time to music. He transferred to the Art Institute in Vancouver, studying audio engineering and playing in a disco cover band called Shag. Hook released a pair of albums under his birth name in 2004 and 2006, while his music was featured on various television shows like The Hills and Bones. At that time, his sound was organic and guitar-based, showing off a more relaxed acoustic vibe. He scored a modest hit with the heartbreaking ode "Soldier," which went on to become an unofficial Canadian anthem played on Remembrance Day. However, by 2012, his sound had morphed into a more pop-oriented vision, incorporating his wide array of musical influences. His debut as Shawn Hook was 2012's Cosmonaut & the Girl (Kreative Soul Entertainment/EMI Canada). In 2015, as his American exposure increased, he signed with Hollywood Records. His second album, Analog Love (Universal Music Canada) was released in June 2015, with a shortened EP-length version released in the United States that year as well. His strong falsetto was paired with new electronic-inspired indie pop songs, with elements of R&B, soul, and disco peppered throughout, recalling the breezy, melodic sounds of Maroon 5, Fitz & the Tantrums, and even Enrique Iglesias. In 2017, Hook teamed with Vanessa Hudgens for the brooding single "Reminding Me." ~ Neil Z. Yeung
