About Roop Kumar Rathod

From turning heads with his tabla skills to touring the world, playback singer and music director Roop Kumar Rathod has enjoyed a rich musical life punctuated by blockbusters, religious devotion and experimentation. • Musical talent runs in the artist’s family: he’s the son of classical singer Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod and brother to the late music director Shravan and playback singer Vinod. His wife Sunali is also a singer—they have toured extensively across the world together—as is their daughter Reewa. • Rathod attracted attention in childhood as a skilful tabla player, and it was only as a young man that he turned to singing to bolster his grasp of music. • The artist made a major breakthrough in 1997, singing the anthemic “Sandese Aate Hai” for the war film Border. Another huge hit came in 2008 with “Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai” on the Bollywood blockbuster Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. • Outside of cinema, Rathod has sung many impassioned and soulful Sufis devotionals, such as “Maula Mere Maula” and lively ghazals like “Dil Machalta Rahe”—not to mention various collaborative fusion works. • The singer has a keen eye for photography and even released his own wildlife photobook, Wild Voyage, in 2019.
