About Peter Gregson

Peter Gregson ingeniously re(de)fines “fusion” as applied to new music's blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Born in Edinburgh in 1987, Gregson studied cello and composition at London's Royal Academy of Music, then music technology at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A headphones company fittingly commissioned his 2010 debut EP, Terminal, whose atmospheric electroacoustic minimalism foreshadowed rich and colourful albums like Lights in the Sky (2014) and Touch (2015). In 2017, Quartets: One and Two exhibited his increasingly hypnotic ideas in acoustic and electronically augmented forms, respectively. Gregson broke out commercially in 2018 with Deutsche Grammophon’s Bach: The Cello Suites - Recomposed by Peter Gregson, on which he performs thoughtfully inventive variations on these familiar masterpieces alongside a cello quintet and a no less emotionally resonant synthesiser. Gregson has also written distinctive music for dance, films, the TV series Bridgerton and Boundless, a video game. His 2021 release Patina invites listeners to descend beneath his sonic surfaces to explore deeper and subtler musical mysteries.
