Norbert Burgmüller

About Norbert Burgmüller

Norbert Burgmuller was the son of Johann August Franz. He, like his father, was a German composer but also a pianist. He studied with Hauptmann and Spohr -- his father did not balk at sending him to study; Johann's father attempted to quench his son's musical and theatrical desires. Like Schubert, he had no public acclaim or audience but had a number of friends who were artists from a variety of genres including Mendelssohn. At the age of 26 Norbert left a number of indications that he could have been one of Germany's great composers. A passion and ability to contend with extensive arrangements were implied in his "Rhapsody for piano in B-mol," "Overture in D-dur," and the "Piano Concerto in F#-mol". Norbert Burgmuller also composed two symphonies of which the second remained unfinished. ~ Keith Johnson
