b. Jeff Newton, 22 April 1946, Australia. St. John was responsible for forming various bands in the Sydney area. From 1965, St John covered soul hits from America which were relatively unknown in Australia. His best known bands were Jeff St. John And The Id, Copperwine and Yama, (all of which had good live followings); his charting songs were ‘Big Time Operator’ (1967) and ‘Teach Me How to Fly’ (1971). His voice was powerful and strong, providing an obvious focus for his bands but disputes about direction lead to St. John following a solo career in 1972. After visiting the UK and the USA he was finally offered a recording contract with Asylum Records, and became the first Australian to record with that label. The single ‘A Fool In Love’ reached the Top 10 in 1977 in Australia. Despite releasing a number of singles since and performing in front of several excellent bands, his career, hindered since he became wheelchair-bound in the late 60s, has maintained a low profile.
