About George E. Lewis

Award-winning composer, trombonist, electronicist, and educator George E. Lewis has been a member of Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, and his compositions have been performed across the globe. Lewis has worked in jazz styles from New Orleans and hard bop to modal and free, but he is not a jazz musician. His playing trademarks include long lines, elegant phrasing, and voice-like effects. An exceptional soloist, he's able to improvise cleanly at blistering tempos, and plays with warmth and humor, as heard on his 1976 debut, The Solo Trombone Record. He's equally adept at composing classical and electronic works, such as 1979's electro-acoustic Homage to Charles Parker and 2021's electronic offering The Recombinant Trilogy. Lewis is the author of A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music. In 2023, George Lewis: Afterword, An Opera in Two Acts was recorded by International Contemporary Ensemble.
