Reward

Reward

To write her fifth album, indie-rock adventurer Cate Le Bon spent a year living in a remote cottage in the Lake District, attending a furniture-making course by day and composing alone at the piano in the evenings. Despite that isolation, the Mercury-nominated Reward feels like an open house, ushering you in with some of the Welsh singer-songwriter’s warmest, most immediate music to date—the lopsided pop of “Daylight Matters”, the gorgeous, rolling melodies of “Here It Comes Again”. Stay for a while though and you’ll feel the melancholy within Le Bon’s rich, artful arrangements, with pangs of solitude rising out of refrains such as “Love you, I love you, I love you, I love you but you’re not here” (“Daylight Matters”).
