In 2018, as part of Deutsche Grammophon’s Recomposed series, Scottish cellist Peter Gregson offered a fresh perspective of Bach’s six Cello Suites, with cutting-edge digital effects and ingenious, minimalist reinterpretations. Here, in this live recording from early 2020, Gregson is joined by five fellow cellists at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles for a brilliantly executed re-creation of six movements from that now-legendary album. There’s an added spontaneity to these live performances, as well as a more immediate, closer sound and altogether richer textures. The central Allemande sings with renewed yearning, while Suite No. 6’s Gigue dances with fresh abandon, Gregson revelling in its rhythms and luxuriating in the sumptuous accompaniment.
