Penny Tai’s Follow Your Heart: Flights of Fancy

“This is for the times when we forget how to relax,” Penny Tai tells Apple Music. “Music is like a master key that can open up countless possibilities.” Working on her album 被动的观众 (“The Passive Audience”) during the pandemic, the freedom that music provides the imagination helped the Malaysian singer-songwriter through prolonged bouts with insomnia and isolation that she explores on the songs (“三四点了还没睡”) (“Still Awake”) and (“多亏你啊”) (“Thanks To You”). In her final instalment as Guest Curator, Tai shares her “Flights of Fancy” playlist—songs that give us a reason to twist and shout when we’re on our own. “Don’t worry about whether or not you can dance. Just let go and start swaying when the music plays!” Her upbeat collection is an eclectic mix of songs Tai deeply appreciates but admits she “couldn’t write”, including Janelle Monáe’s funk-fuelled “Tightrope” and the Shiloh Dynasty-featuring alt-R&B track “DGAF” from Noah Slee—plus songs that reveal a love for hip-hop: “That attitude somehow allows me to release emotions that I can’t release on my own.” Tai shares her thoughts on some of the tracks: “How Deep Is Your Love” by Jonatha Brooke “It’s my phone’s ringtone, which shows how much I like this song. The whole album is one of my idol Bob Clearmountain’s remixes that I heard at his house. I’m so honoured to have worked with such a master and I will never forget it.” “Don’t You Worry ’Bout Me” by Lukas Graham “My favourite male singer-songwriter in recent years. He has a very rebellious personality. Listening to his work, you can appreciate his complex experiences and admire the resoluteness that his voice carries. The main reasons for choosing this song were the lyrics and musical contrast—how it is optimistic yet painful.” “U Move, I Move” by John Legend feat. Jhene Aiko “Yes! It’s been one of my favourite songs since I started skateboarding over the past two years. It’s definitely a song that gets my emotions flowing. Listening to it while feeling the wind as you skate is so awesome!”
